Within the framework of structural reforms implemented in the Republic, the State Committee of the Republic of Azerbaijan for Ecology and Control over the Use of Natural Resources, the State Committee of the Republic of Azerbaijan for Geology and Mineral Resources, the State Committee of the Republic of Azerbaijan for Hydrometeorology, and the “Azermesha” Production Union, which were engaged in separate areas of environmental protection and the use of natural resources and whose activities overlapped, were abolished by Decree No. 485 of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated May 23, 2001. The Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Azerbaijan was created by merging the State Committee for Ecology and Control over the Use of Natural Resources with the State Committee for Geology and Mineral Resources. The Charter of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Azerbaijan” was approved by Decree No. 583 of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated September 18, 2001.

     

According to its Charter, the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Azerbaijan is the central executive authority responsible for implementing state policy in the Republic of Azerbaijan, including the part of the Caspian Sea (lake) belonging to Azerbaijan, in the fields of environmental protection, management of natural resource use, efficient utilization of groundwater, mineral raw materials, and other natural resources, their restoration, as well as the observation and forecasting of hydrometeorological processes.
