The Baku Stock Exchange plays a pivotal role in this endeavor, serving as a catalyst for economic development and prosperity of investors and issuers. The history of capital markets of Azerbaijan dates back to 1886 with the establishment of the first trading platform, the Baku Exchange. Notable milestones in Azerbaijan’s early capital market history include the issuance of bonds for the construction of the Shollar Water Pipeline in 1909 and the first issuance of shares in 1913. However, the operations of the Baku Exchange ceased in 1930.
On August 27, 1997, the Baku Stock Exchange was established, laying the foundation for the country’s modern capital markets. Official trading began in 2000, and in subsequent years, BSE advanced with the introduction of corporate bonds, initial public offerings (IPOs), and the CETA trading platform.
In 2019, BSE became a member of the International Association of Exchanges, and in 2020, it commenced collaboration with the World Federation of Exchanges. In 2024, BSE unveiled a new brand identity and achieved significant milestones, including Azerbaijan’s first IPO and the implementation of remote secondary stock market trading. Today, BSE continues to support innovation and sustainable development, maintaining its leading role in the local capital market.
